As the Reef Authority we recognise that outstanding management of the Great Barrier Reef can only be achieved through respectful and meaningful relationships with First Nations people, brought about by listening to and learning from one another and by viewing our work through the lens of reconciliation.

What is a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)?

A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a strategic document that includes practical actions that will drive an organisation’s contribution to reconciliation both internally and in the communities in which it operates. A RAP achieves this by advancing the five dimensions of reconciliation by supporting organisations to develop respectful relationships and create meaningful opportunities with First Nations people.

In 2019 we successfully completed a first tier Reflect RAP which aims to lay the foundations and prepare our workplace for future RAPs and reconciliation initiatives. Building on our successes including, embedding a cultural capability training program with mandatory training for module one, achieving our previous employment target and undertaking and adhering to Acknowledgement of Country and Welcome to Country protocols at the beginning of all significant events.

Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan

The Reef Authority has had significant marked progress in our reconciliation journey since the implementation of the first Reflect RAP in 2019.

Now, the Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, endorsed by Reconciliation Australia will continue that journey and be used to further improve the way we develop and strengthen relationships with First Nations people, support the engagement of staff and stakeholders in reconciliation and develop and pilot innovative approaches that empower First Nations people through our programs and projects. It’s the intention of this plan to translate the Reef Authority’s reconciliation vision into practical and intentional actions that will continue to contribute to reconciliation within the Reef Authority and with First Nations peoples.

The Reef Authority acknowledge the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group and thank Reconciliation Australia whose guidance and support were instrumental in the development of the Reef Authority’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan.
