Together with the Traditional Owner groups of the southern Great Barrier Reef, we have embarked on a new chapter in marine park management by developing a Southern Plan of Management.

Known for pristine waters and isolated experiences, the Far Northern Management Area extends from the northern boundary at the tip of Cape York to Cooktown.

Renowned for its beautiful coral cays and islands and close proximity to spectacular outer edge reefs, the Management Area extends from Cooktown to Mission Beach.

There are beautiful coral cays, islands and spectacular outer edge reefs from Cairns, Port Douglas and Cooktown. It is one of the most highly visited regions on the Reef.

Home to some of the Great Barrier Reef’s most iconic destinations — including the ruggedly beautiful Hinchinbrook Island and the iconic Whitsundays.

Hinchinbrook is a place of rugged beauty with a diverse habitats and natural attractions. The area is popular for boating, fishing and island camping.

The Whitsundays is one of the most highly visited regions in the Great Barrier Reef; recognised for its island scenery, secluded sandy beaches, blue waters and wildlife.

The most southern region includes a number of important habitats and popular destinations including the Keppels, Shoalwater Bay, Capricorn Bunkers and Lady Elliot Island.

Shoalwater Bay is an important seagrass habitat within the Marine Park and is home to the largest dugong population in the Reef’s southern region.
