The Australian and Queensland governments’ Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan) provides an overarching long-term strategy for managing the Great Barrier Reef — it coordinates actions and guides adaptive management to 2050.

The Reef 2050 Plan has recently been updated to ensure it remains current and addresses emerging issues informed by the latest knowledge and science.

Reef 2050 vision

The updated Plan’s vision for the Reef in 2050 is: The Great Barrier Reef is sustained as a living natural and cultural wonder of the world.

It includes a greater focus on climate change and its impact on the Reef. It also focuses on addressing local and regional pressures over which people in Australia and Queensland have direct control: land-based run-off, coastal development and direct human use of the Reef.

The updated Plan seeks to empower communities to take stronger action to protect the Reef.

The Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program is a key part of the Reef 2050 Plan — moving forward the monitoring program will track the progress of the Reef 2050 Plan’s outcomes and targets.

The Reef 2050 Plan 2019 Annual Report provides an overview of progress in implementing the Reef 2050 Plan from December 2017 to November 2018. This is the fourth Report for the Reef 2050 Plan.
