Zoning helps to manage and protect the values of the Marine Park. Each zone has different rules for the activities that are allowed, prohibited, and require a permit.

Some commercial activities and operations occurring in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Great Barrier Reef (Coast) Marine Park require a permit.

The environmental management charge (EMC) is associated with most commercial activities, including tourism operations, non-tourist charter operations, and facilities. 

Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements are community-based plans for management and outline how Traditional Owners manage their Sea Country.

The guidelines outline the requirements for filming and/or sound recording on or under the water. Review to determine if a permit is required for your activity. 

If you use the waters of the Marine Park, you have a responsibility to help protect whales and dolphins and to keep safe distances from them.

Public moorings are available to all Reef users and are installed at popular locations. Public mooring locations (GPS coordinates) are available to help you locate them.
