The World Heritage Committee has considered the State of Conservation of the Great Barrier Reef at its 46th meeting in New Delhi, India, (21 – 31 July).
While the Committee continues to hold concern for the Reef owing to the impacts of climate change and other localised impacts, it commended the efforts of Australia to protect and conserve the Reef.
The Committee did not add the Reef to the list of World Heritage in Danger.
The Committee acknowledged the significant efforts to safeguard the Reef to date and encouraged continued actions to address threats to the Reef, particularly climate change, water quality and fishing pressures.
Australia will be required to submit a progress report by 1 February 2025 and a State of Conservation report by 1 February 2026.
