The Australian Government’s flagship Reef Guardian School program is ‘going global’ and taking the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef into classrooms around the world.
Announced yesterday, the program can now be accessed by any school in the world. This enables everyone, in one way or another, to experience the Reef and commit to its protection.
Launched in 2003 by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, this year marks 20 years of encouraging schools to commit to the protection and conservation of this World Heritage-listed natural icon and enables students learn about environmental sustainability, the Reef’s interconnected ecosystems, and the threats facing the Reef.
Over the past two decades, it is estimated that more than 350,000 students have attended and experienced the Reef Guardian School program.
Currently the initiative has more than 270 schools, 7400 teachers and 120,000 students involved in building the Reef’s resilience.
The program brings the wonders of the Reef into the classroom by combining interactive learning with the latest science and sustainable management practices developed by Reef Authority experts, which are incorporated into the Australian curriculum.
