Entries are now open for the Reef Guardian Schools Global Eco-Challenge, where students are encouraged to use emerging technologies to explore the Great Barrier Reef and its connected ecosystems.
The Reef Guardian Schools initiative is a worldwide education program. Participating schools care for the Reef and undertake positive actions within their school and local community that contribute to Reef protection and resilience.
Reef Guardian Schools receive education resources and training opportunities, to educate young people about the Great Barrier Reef, the challenges it faces, and what can be done to ensure its safe future.
There are over 350 Reef Guardian Schools from across five continents with the most recent schools signing up from South Africa and India.
The eco-challenge theme aligns with the Australian Curriculum and Australian National Science Week: Species Survival - More than just sustainability, which aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
As part of the eco-challenge students are encouraged to explore gamification and the application of game mechanics to encourage society to engage in pro environmental behaviours.
Reef Authority Assistant Director of Education Elizabeth Hickman said the competition is a great way to get students interested in eco-friendly ideas.
“All schools, no matter where they’re located, can have some positive impact on the Great Barrier Reef and other coral reefs around the world,” Ms Hickman said.
“Through these challenges, I am amazed at the creativity the students demonstrate. Not only do they create some incredible pieces as part of the eco-challenge, but the students are able to share broader awareness of Reef protection to the wider community through their work.
“We are looking for games that are creative and engaging, whilst also encouraging the players to adopt pro-environmental behaviours to aid the survival of Earths aquatic species.”
Submissions for this year’s eco-challenge close on Friday 8 November.
